Governors take decisions that directly affect the education and well-being of our children. Governors bring a wide range of experience and different expertise to the role, including professional skills and knowledge. What is important is a desire to support Grendon and being part of a team committed to promoting high standards and the philosophy of the Growth Mindset.
The Governing Body is responsible for establishing the vision and values of the school, setting goals for achievement in all areas of school life, and then monitoring how well those goals are being met. We are also responsible for agreeing the budget for the school, directing resources where they can be used to give our children the best possible teaching and learning experience. We don’t get involved with the day-to-day running and management of the school – that’s the responsibility of the headteacher.
The Governing Body consists of 12 members. These consist of staff, parent, LEA and Co-Opted Governors and bring a wide range of skills and experience to Grendon.
Governors are appointed for a four-year period, but can stand for re-election provided they meet required criteria for the vacant post, or leave before the end of their term if circumstances dictate necessary.
There are two full Governing Body meeting held every term. Dates are set a year in advance and currently start at 6:45pm and finish by 9pm. At present meetings take place on a Tuesday. The full Governing Body meeting covers all statutory requirements, and procedural items that need to be tabled at least once a year. It also covers Headteacher, governors and subcommittee reports along with any other business relevant to be updated at the full governing body meetings.
Every new governor has an opportunity to participate in any sub-committee they feel would interest them, but it is wise not to get over committed during the early days as induction training can take up free time. During their first year governors may wish to attend the main Governing Body meetings, shadow an experienced governor on a school visit and “visit” some of the sub committees they feel they may be interested in joining. This way they will have the opportunity to “sample a taster” of all aspects of the Governing Body responsibilities.
To work with the Headteacher to set and monitor the budget throughout the year, ensuring funds are best deployed to achieve maximum value for the school and all commitments can be met. They also have Personnel, Premises and Health & Safety under their remit too.
If you are interested in becoming a school governor at Grendon, please contact any of the governors for more information. They can be contacted by message via the school office, 01296 770 388 or firstname.lastname@example.org, and will return your call as soon as possible.
