Welcome to Year 5
Year 5 is taught by Miss Mansfield and Mrs Barber.
Autumn Term Timetable
Autumn 1 Topic - 'Alchemy Island'
This half term our new project is called 'Alchemy Island'. The focus subjects of this project are Science and Music! See below for more information about the project along with ideas for extra activities you can be doing at home.
"It’s time to suspend your disbelief and open your mind. We’re going on a magical journey to Alchemy Island. Can you find the gold hidden deep within the island’s mysterious landscape? The only way is to study the map, unravel the riddle and begin your adventure. On the way, you must do all you can to learn about gold and master the ancient art of alchemy. Be creative and try to impress the island’s team of ace alchemists. Will they praise your scientific expertise? What if there were a video game version of Alchemy Island? Could you compose a stunning soundtrack to bring this mysterious landscape to life? You’ve got your map, coordinates and everything else you need to make your way across Alchemy Island. Don’t forget to pack your imagination. Got your suitcase ready? Then let the journey begin!"
To continue to develop your child's literacy and comprehension skills, we expect them to read at home every day. Children should read aloud to a parent or carer who can then sign their daily reading records. Children cannot sign the reading records themselves. We would suggest hearing your children read 1-2 pages each day of their reading book, before letting them continue reading independently. We also aim to hear every child read aloud at least once a week in class, either through whole class guided reading or on a 1:1 basis during daily quiet reading time.
Year 5 pupils will be given two pieces of homework each week; one in Maths and one in English or Topic. Homework will be set on a Thursday on Google Classroom, to be completed and 'turned in' on Google Classroom by the following Tuesday for marking.
It is expected that each child attempts their homework independently first before receiving any support from parents, carers or siblings. Time taken to complete each piece of homework will vary depending on the task and your child, but we aim for most tasks to last approximately 30-45 minutes.
Half termly tasks:
This year, pupils will be given a half termly spelling list. This will consist of words from the Y5/6 national curriculum spelling list. It is expected that children will practise and learn these regularly at home, alongside them being taught in school, to be assessed in a dictation at the end of each half term.
Please find a copy of the half termly spelling lists below along with suggested methods of practice.
Year 5 have PE on Mondays and Tuesdays. Children should come to school dressed in PE kits on these days each week. Please consider clothing choices as the weather changes too - jogging bottoms may become preferable as the winter months come!
Children should keep a pair of trainers in school at all times too - these will be used for other activities such as the daily mile.
Forest School and Art
On a Wednesday afternoon, year 5 will split into two groups, Group 1 and Group 2. Half of the class will go to Forest School and the other half will go to the Art Room for an art lesson. They will then alternate each week. Please ensure your child has their clothes for Forest School with them in school when it is their turn.
